In this post I want to give a brief overview of the Linux distribution landscape. There are hundreds of distributions out there so I will only cover the most important ones. The main families which Linux distributions derive from are Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Debian.
Popular distributions that derive from Red Hat are:
- CentOS
- Fedora
- Oracle Linux
- Rocky Linux
- AlmaLinux
Fedora and CentOS are upstream projects of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
When it comes to Debian based distributions the most popular one is Ubuntu. Other popular Debian based ones are:
- Linux Mint
- Kali Linux
